ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Helena will soon begin work on Mount Helena City Park to remove about 1,000 wind-damaged trees from December’s windstorm; crews will cut trees into slash piles and adjust larger logs by removing bark every three inches to dry them and lower the risk of a bark beetle outbreak (this plan aims to protect the park’s ecosystem) before beetles fly in May. - ➤ Helena cleared a homeless encampment near Cruse and 11th avenues on Thursday morning after complaints that tents blocked pedestrian access (a city spokesperson said). Independent Record

- ➤ Helena para educator Chris Findley, who coaches the Helena Twisters at C.R. Anderson Middle School, was named Special Olympics Montana coach of the year for 2026 — she was chosen from 15 finalists. KXLH
