COMMUNITY NEWS

  • About 50 Carroll students, 6 Special Olympics Montana Tri-County athletes and local partners marched nearly a mile at Carroll College in Helena on March 20 as part of the 5th Annual Down Syndrome Awareness Walk held ahead of World Down Syndrome Awareness Day. President Maddie Visser said the event grew significantly since 2020—helping the college earn the Unified Champion School award for 2025.  KTVH

CRIME NEWS

  • A Lewis & Clark County teen admitted to starting a grass fire near Canyon Ferry Reservoir that led to the Horse Gulch Fire, which burned over 15,000 acres, cost about $20 million in suppression & took the life of a firefighting pilot, and he was tried in juvenile court where he was placed on probation with restrictions and 100 hours of community service required.  KXLH

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Women’s Commemorative Mural in downtown Helena shows how local women helped shape the city—by celebrating their everyday acts—to leave a lasting mark. It spotlights Fanny Sperry Steele, who won ride titles at the Calgary Stampede in 1912 and 1913, Belle and Frieda Fligelman, who helped boost women's voices in politics and community groups, and Maria Dean, who became Montana’s first licensed doctor.  KXLH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • York’s Islands Fishing Access Site near Townsend reopened on March 20 at 3:40 p.m. after a month-long closure caused by flooding from an ice jam on the Missouri River+Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said other fishing access sites along the Madison River remain closed due to ongoing damage.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, Lewis and Clark County held a disaster response training with nonprofits and first responders to practice handling flash floods, wildfires, and windstorms. The exercise checked each group's ability to work together during crises in areas like York—more drills are planned for this spring.  KTVH
  • Helena officials and Dick Anderson Construction began restoring the historic fire tower before Christmas, and the $385,000 project—replacing fire-damaged and rotten wood while preserving its old style—will be completed by mid-summer.  KXLH
