Good morning, Helena. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of April.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Since December, trade uncertainty has raised gold prices more than 11% to above $3,300 an ounce and widened the silver-to-gold ratio from 16 to about 105—this shift has led Grizzly Gold and Silver to buy more from local sellers even though tariffs have not directly increased costs. This trend ties to Montana’s long mining history and could shape future local investment decisions.  KTVH
  • Trade uncertainty has driven an 11% rise in gold prices since December with spot prices now over $3,300 an ounce and the silver-to-gold ratio shifting from about 16 to 1 to nearly 105 to 1. Scott Boulanger, president of Grizzly Gold and Silver, said Montana’s long history with gold mining is now meeting increased investor interest while businesses sell less gold and buy more.  KXLH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge heard motions in Montana’s lawsuit against Yellowstone over bison management last Thursday. The hearing included requests from tribes (the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, and the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation) to join as defendants and a motion from Cottonwood Environmental Law Center to pause the case until a required environmental assessment is completed.  KTVH
  • Helena officials plan to build a roundabout at the mini-malfunction junction where stop signs replaced failed traffic signals last year at the meeting of Last Chance Gulch, Helena Avenue and Neill Avenue. The project, estimated to cost $2 million to $2.5 million, will start construction in summer 2026—aiming to improve downtown traffic flow and safety.  KXLH
  • Child-focused nonprofits including ExplorationWorks, Rocky Head Start and Montana Learning Center are preparing to change programs after federal funding cuts removed a three-year grant on April 10th—this loss has threatened services like STEM outreach and preschool education. A proposal to fully cut Head Start could affect over 800,000 students while MLC may soon cut one-fourth of its free NASA programs—further reducing options for children.  KXLH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Four Helena High School track runners are among six Montana boys who qualified for the Class AA state meet in May by posting 1,600-meter times under 4:30. Helena senior Henry Sund posted the fastest at 4:16.89—while teammates Dylan Hill, Elliot Stimpson and Milo Kauffman also qualified.  KXLH
