COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 1st, the Rathskeller in the historic Montana Club will open to the public nearly one year after its final call—local owner Ajitpal Pannu has upgraded the venue with new seating, lighting, a stage, and improved systems. It will run on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. while plans to add more amenities for exclusive members are underway.  KTVH
  • Family Promise began demolition today for its new shelter for the unhoused as it takes over the project after Good Samaritan Ministries stepped back to focus on its thrift store and other programs—this shelter will have 16 rooms with separate entrances for families and women, and it is set to open by December if all goes as planned.  KTVH
  • On April 26, first responders hosted a Public Safety Open House at Helena Regional Airport where visitors inspected fire trucks, a SWAT vehicle, and a bomb robot—with hands-on views of the equipment—and saw K-9 demonstrations and a tour of the 911 Center.  KXLH

CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old man was sentenced on Monday to 60 years in prison—10 years suspended—for his role in the 2023 shooting death of Rocky Mountain College football player Chandler Stalcup, while another individual charged with homicide awaits trial.  KXLH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Helena and East Helena public school board elections will be held on May 6 — the article lists the candidates running so voters can know their options.  Independent Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montana Legislature backed Senate Bill 326 to continue media tax credits under the Media Act and extend the program through 2045—lawmakers changed the bill so qualifying companies can earn 30 percent for Montana or tribal crew wages and 40 percent for renting local studios. If it becomes law, the bill will also fund a 2027 report to show how media productions affect our state.  KTVH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Carroll College hosted its annual mock mass casualty drill and debuted its new Mobile Health Unit to give nursing students hands-on training using simulated victims from an explosion that injured 50 people — a setup designed to boost quick decision-making during disasters. The exercise involved local medical teams and a helicopter and will help the unit soon travel to underserved communities across Montana.  KTVH
