COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Just Indigenous Corporate Services supports families dealing with Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons cases by offering free legal and organizing help—cultivating strong ties with law enforcement to improve investigations and reduce racial bias. The group is now setting up a contact email to accept new clients.  KXLH

CRIME NEWS

  • Haley Omeasoo, a Blackfeet and Hopi PhD student, is re-opening cold Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women cases in Montana by using DNA analysis from the state crime lab and help from local law enforcement—her nonprofit aims to give families closure and more resources on reservations. She will finish her degree this spring and plans to continue her work in partnership with law enforcement and community groups.  KXLH
  • On May 2, a detention officer at the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center was stabbed in the face with a sharpened toothbrush by inmate Conrad Olsway while serving dinner, and a second officer subdued him; the injured officer, who called the wound 'just a scratch,' has returned to work.  KXLH
  • Two brothers died after being shot near Wolf Creek—police say Ty Steinbach's death is being treated as a homicide with his brother Scott named as the suspect while Scott's own death is under investigation.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the Senate voted 23—27 against a resolution to study how to use the 12,000‐square‐foot governor’s mansion at 2 N. Carson St. Lawmakers offered ideas—such as turning it into a roller rink or a dorm for legislative staff—to address high maintenance costs and needed repairs, but no study will be conducted.  Independent Record
