CRIME NEWS

  • The first of the 38 huskies—seized in an alleged animal cruelty case from owner Heather Dawn Prody in February and now cared for by the Lewis and Clark Humane Society—are ready for adoption as court proceedings continue.  KXLH
  • Thirty-eight huskies seized in an alleged animal cruelty case became the property of the Lewis and Clark Humane Society after their owner, Heather Dawn Prody, relinquished them—some are already ready for adoption.  KTVH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Montana Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Office announced that the Western Clay Manufacturing Tile Plant on the Archie Bray Foundation campus — a historic industrial site — will receive $41,720 for stabilization, re-roofing, and repairs as it transforms into an exhibit and meeting space this summer.  KXLH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Helena voters rejected two school technology levies Tuesday night and elected trustee Jenny Murnane Butcher along with incumbents Kay Satre and board chair Siobahn Hathhorn while also passing an elementary general fund levy to help reduce a $2 million deficit. Superintendent Rex Weltz said cuts will be needed for the 2025 to 2026 school year—trustee Butcher noted that closing Hawthorne Elementary may be necessary to prevent even deeper cuts.  KTVH
  • Preliminary results show Helena voters have chosen trustee candidates Siobahn Hathhorn, Kay Satre and Jenny Murnane Butcher as ballots continue to be counted after polls closed at 8 p.m. Meanwhile, narrow margins defeated the technology levies for the high school and elementary districts—although an elementary general fund levy passed by over 1,000 votes and a decision on Hawthorne Elementary School's future will come in June.  KXLH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maribeth Ault was named the Shikar Safari Wildlife Officer of the Year Award recipient for Montana and became the first female game warden in the state to receive the honor — she has worked in wildlife law enforcement for four and a half years. Lieutenant Governor Juras and Fish, Wildlife and Parks Director Christ Clark presented the award with her family in attendance.  KTVH

HEALTH NEWS

  • National Nurses Week began on May 6 and runs through May 12 to honor nurses who care for patients every day — Helena locals can show thanks by treating a nurse to lunch, coffee, or a card, and this year’s theme is The Power of Nurses.  KXLH
