COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Students at St. Andrew Catholic School watched TV coverage of the vote that elected Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, as they finished their final exams yesterday. Bishop Austin Vetter and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena released a statement congratulating the new pope — Vetter will lead a mass at the Cathedral of St. Helena today at 7 a.m.  KTVH
  • Dozens of community members gathered at the county cemetery for a memorial service hosted by the Lewis & Clark County coroner’s division to honor 18 unclaimed remains, with nearly 100 people laying flowers and listening to honor songs by the Magpie Drummers and Singers — Chaplain Jason Smith read the names as the sheriff’s honor guard ceremonially folded a flag.  KXLH
  • The Lewis and Clark County Coroner’s Division held a burial service at the county cemetery Thursday to honor 18 unclaimed individuals—residents placed flowers and listened to honor songs—and nearly 100 people attended the event.  KTVH

  • The Helena Police Department is searching for 17-year-old Hallie Hardesty who was last seen on May 6 wearing a red hoodie and shorts—authorities note her disappearance is not considered suspicious.  MontanaRightNow

CULTURE NEWS

  • This summer, four historic properties will receive funding from the SHPO Grant by the Montana Historical Society—Helena’s Western Clay Manufacturing Tile Plant will get $41,720 for repairs while Dayton State Bank, the Terry museum, and Virginia City Schoolhouse will receive $20,000, $55,000, and $40,000 respectively to support their rehabilitation and new public uses. The grant was awarded after a competitive process that saw 32 applications requesting more than $2.2 million, all to preserve heritage tourism and community history.  KTVH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 400 fourth-grade students from Helena and nearby areas attended Archaeology Day hosted by the Montana Historical Society to learn about Montana’s past through hands-on activities like a mock excavation — the event showed students how people lived long ago.  KTVH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Helena High softball sits at the top of the Western AA standings with two games left, and senior pitcher Faith Howard has thrown two no-hitters and recorded 11 double-digit strikeout games this season—she plans to play collegiate softball at MSU Billings next season.  KTVH
