  • The Helena Farmers' Market board voted to use local funds to pay for the remaining difference in Double SNAP benefits after a statewide freeze limited state reimbursements—ensuring SNAP users receive doubled benefits on fresh produce until the program ends this season.  Independent Record
  • On Thursday morning, a service at the Lewis and Clark County Cemetery honored 18 unclaimed dead through music and prayers as their remains were placed in a columbarium. About 100 community members attended the event — each showing that every life deserves a proper resting place.  Independent Record

  • A familiar mural above No Sweat Cafe in Helena was refreshed and reimagined today — giving the local landmark a new look for the community.  Independent Record
  • Gold Rush Days started with a ribbon-cutting for the Helena History Tours office in Reeder’s Alley on Thursday — the weekend will feature can can dancers, old photos from Montana Picture Gallery, self-guided Pioneer Cabin tours, ceramic painting, and cultural talks including a Chinese history presentation and elders’ stories that highlight the city’s mining heritage. Local organizers say the event helps residents connect with Helena’s diverse history.  KXLH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carroll College will honor 290 graduates today at its 115th commencement ceremony, with a Baccalaureate mass at the Cathedral of St. Helena at 9:30 a.m. and the main event at Nelson Stadium at 1:00 p.m.; the program features performances by the Magpie Drummers + Singers and a final address by Dr. John Cech.  KTVH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologist Maura Casey warned that although the air feels summer-like, the water in lakes and rivers remains cold (in the 40s and 50s) and can shock swimmers by cooling the body 25 times faster than air. She urged everyone to wear a life jacket, as water below 50 degrees may cause dangerous cold water shock.  KTVH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Infection control experts gathered in Helena on Friday at a conference to learn how to prepare for waterborne hazards after floods. They shared plans to keep drinking water safe and discussed how agencies would coordinate responses in future flood emergencies.  KTVH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Helena High School and Capital High School track and field teams held their annual meet at Vigilante Stadium Thursday afternoon, where students broke several school records in events like the 110 meter hurdles, long jump and 100 meter dash — officials said full results will be shared later.  KTVH
  • The 25th Don't Fence Me In trail race is set for today in Helena and features six events + four new courses that promise friendly competition and celebration.  Independent Record
