Good morning, Helena. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 17th of May.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Helena’s Last Chance Tour Train, which has run for over 70 years, is in trouble as it faces unusual large expenses—needing a $200,000 engine to keep its tours running. The nonprofit raised fares by one dollar for adults and seniors this year and asks for community ideas and donations, with public tours set to begin on June 1—helping preserve a local piece of history. - ➤ Family Promise broke ground on a new homeless shelter on Thursday in Helena as city and state leaders, nonprofit representatives, and board members marked three years of planning. The project will have 16 rooms and is 80% funded—construction is expected to take six to eight months once an additional $200,000 is raised. KXLH
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Downtown Helena has a deep history tied to Masonic groups who built the city's landmarks and still meet in old halls. A get together is held today at the consistory shrine on Jackson Street from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with food, cigars+fine spirits and the groups raise about $100,000 each year for Montana public schools. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Helena city officials said work will begin Monday on rerouting the Prickly Pear Trail immediately south of the Beattie Street Trailhead parking area. Independent Record
- ➤ City officials say that about 1,500 slash piles on Mt. Helena above LeGrande Cannon Blvd were made from thinning and pruning trees as part of fire safety work on open lands. The piles will dry over one summer and be burned from Dec.1 to March1 to lower wildfire risks — each site is checked every 10 years. KXLH
- ➤ Last July, the Montana legislature approved two laws that give cities more power to enforce rules against unsheltered camping, but Helena officials say they will stick with the current approach since most people pack up by morning. Helena Police Capt. Jayson Zander noted that fixed encampments are not allowed plus a community cleanup program helps manage the small issues that do arise. KXLH
