COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Elementary students and local groups placed flags at over twenty cemeteries to honor veterans ahead of Memorial Day, and volunteers picked up trash at historic sites as part of the event. Fifth-grade students from Broadwater Elementary joined the Daughters of the American Revolution+placing more than 100 flags+to pay respect to those who served.  KXLH

CRIME NEWS

  • Gordon Eric Barraugh, an East Helena man, was sentenced on Thursday to five years and four months in prison for felony possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine—he faces his punishment for drug charges.  Independent Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emergency Medical Services responders were honored yesterday when the Department of Public Health and Human Services and the lieutenant governor awarded six EMS personnel from across the state for their exemplary service. Dayle Perrin of East Helena earned the 911 Dispatcher of the Year Award — and Governor Gianforte declared this week EMS Week and EMS for Children Day.  KTVH
  • The Helena City Commission is considering raising the fee at the Transfer Station by $4 per ton to $58.75 per ton to cover costs at the Lewis and Clark County Landfill+ a vote on the change is scheduled for June 16.  Independent Record
  • Congressman Ryan Zinke removed a provision to sell about half a million acres of public lands from the House budget reconciliation because he said that selling these lands sets a dangerous precedent, even if the property is in Utah and Nevada. He said managing and protecting public lands is a better choice and promised to work on bills that will help conserve them for the future.  KXLH

  • Lewis and Clark Public Health launched a two-day alcohol safety campaign (at Capitol and Helena High Schools and Project for Alternative Learning High School) to address Montana’s high DUI fatality rate where impaired driving caused 60 percent of fatal crashes. Indigenous hip hop artist Christian Takes the Gun Parrish (Supaman) shared his personal story to encourage moderation and promote sober discussions in the community.  MontanaRightNow
