COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity helped new homeowner Jenna Kavajecz secure the keys to her affordable home in East Helena after 10 months of community-built construction starting in October. The nonprofit has built over 50 homes locally and plans to use its self-help program to keep housing permanently affordable.  KTVH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grandstreet Theatre will present Guys and Dolls Jr. and SIX: Teen Edition this summer in Helena as part of its 50th anniversary season, giving local audiences a chance to enjoy live theatre.  Independent Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Helena Public Schools board swore in new trustees today; the district said (in a statement) that their service will strengthen school oversight. The new members will help guide decisions for local schools.  Independent Record
  • Helena Public Schools honored 25 Native American seniors at Wednesday’s graduation, where each student received a handmade stole and smudge kit. The ceremony celebrated cultural heritage with traditional drum songs and set additional ceremonies at Helena and Capital High for early June.  KXLH
  • East Helena Public Schools unanimously approved a separation agreement for teacher Erik Pritchard, who will leave his position on June 30—he will remain on paid leave and receive a lump sum payout along with a neutral recommendation.  KTVH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Helena Parks, Recreation, and Open Lands staff propose four trail projects to improve conditions, including relocating the Oakes Street Park trail and reworking the DeFord trailhead plus parking area. Commissioners split over the changes during a Wednesday meeting and will vote Monday, June 1.  KTVH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Love For the Game Baseball has fundraised more than half of the $115,000 needed to bring high school baseball to Helena while the school board will vote on adding the sport on June 9—an effort that aims to create opportunities for over 100 players.  KXLH
