CULTURE NEWS

  • Helena’s free concert series, Alive at Five, returns today at 5 p.m. at various locations and will run until August 27. This week’s event at the Lewis+Clark Tap Room features West Texas Americana Rock band Ronnie and The Redwoods along with a Montana Historical Society presentation for Juneteenth.  KXLH
  • Helena is hosting Juneteenth events to mark the end of slavery as Alive at Five, the City of Helena, Montana Historical Society, The Myrna Loy and the Holter Museum of Art team up. Today, Alive @ Five is at Lewis and Clark Brewing and on June 19 a Black History Tour Train (registration required), a free city BBQ and a performance by Blck Agua and Nnamdi Kanaga are planned.  KXLH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews fought the Jericho Mountain Fire on Tuesday as the Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 9—led by Shane Martin and Ian Quist—worked to suppress the 150-acre blaze amid hot, dry weather. Four crews, three dozers, two helicopters, two skidders, two feller bunchers, and six engines were assigned while officials advised the public to avoid the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail between Macdonald Pass and Bullion Parks.  KTVH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Helena is installing a large solar array at Bill Roberts Golf Course — costing about $250,000 and saving roughly $11,000 a year — to help meet its goal of 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030. The plan also includes adding solar panels to the wastewater treatment plant in two years with a $57,000 rebate from Northwestern Energy.  KXLH
  • At Monday’s meeting, the Helena City Commission listened to residents who opposed adopting the pride flag as the official city flag—while supporters like Montana Pride head Kev Hamm urged the commission to stand up for gay rights. Officials said Helena could adopt the flag through a simple resolution, but no action was taken during the meeting.  Independent Record
  • The City of Helena is using solar panels at Bill Roberts Golf Course to generate 80% of the course's energy and save about $11,000 a year as it works toward 100% clean power by 2030. The project cost about $250,000 with a 20-year return and comes with a $57,000 rebate from Northwestern Energy.  KTVH
