- ➤ On Thursday evening, Helena held a Juneteenth celebration where residents honored the end of slavery + celebrated Black history and culture. The event was organized by the Montana Historical Society + City of Helena, Myrna Loy, Holter Museum of Art, and Alive at Five and featured food, lawn games, a tour train, and spoken word performances. - ➤ Grandstreet Theatre is marking 50 years in Helena with nearly 450 shows that draw about 20,000 visitors yearly and add roughly $4,000,000 to the local economy—its mix of youth camps, classes and new Mary Poppins rehearsals shows its ongoing community impact. KTVH
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Helena’s Forest Service tanker base opened early on June 15 to fight the Jericho Mountain Fire even though it normally opens on July 7—its team has helped planes drop more than 32-thousand gallons of fire retardant so far this season. The base supports firefighting efforts here and in other states, and officials warn that drones can interfere with air operations. KTVH
- ➤ A conservation easement protecting 5,300 acres in the Big Belt Mountains was announced Friday by Prickly Pear Land Trust on behalf of the Des Rosier family and Avalanche Corp—ensuring traditional practices and key wildlife habitats remain safeguarded. - ➤ Lewis and Clark Public Health reported a measles exposure event in Helena on June 15 when a visitor from another county visited several local businesses (TJ Maxx, Costco, Old Navy, McKenzie River Pizza, and Town Pump) and no Helena resident has been confirmed with measles yet. KXLH
- ➤ Today, Touchmark in Helena held events from sun-up to sun-down to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease on the summer solstice. Montana has 21,000 seniors with Alzheimer’s and caregivers provide 25 million hours of unpaid care annually — funds raised will support research and a 24-hour support hotline. KTVH
- ➤ Lewis and Clark Public Health is investigating a measles exposure in Helena and is working to identify those most at risk — officials say they will update residents as more details become available. Independent Record
