CRIME NEWS

  • A Helena man—Quincy Reno Brown—was charged Friday with several felonies and misdemeanors after he allegedly led police in a chase at speeds over 100 mph until he was arrested.  Independent Record

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Neel Kashkari, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, visited Helena on Thursday, June 26 to speak with local business leaders about Montana’s economy, saying the only remedy for housing affordability is building more homes and that cryptocurrency is a joke. He also expressed optimism about artificial intelligence and noted that Montana’s strength in tourism may help drive future growth + keep the state competitive.  Independent Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carroll College President John Cech will retire on June 30—after serving since 2018 and advancing campus facilities, academic programs and enrollment. He said his retirement marks the start of a new chapter as he prepares for his next role in higher education.  Independent Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A reclamation project for the former Pretty Girl Placer Mine just south of Helena has restored Grizzly Creek to its flood plain—state grant funding began the work in 2018 and the project is now 80% complete with a walking path soon to be installed.  KTVH
  • Fire crews worked to contain the Jericho Mountain Fire that burned 493 acres by Friday and was 15% contained with 518 personnel fighting it while evacuation warnings remain along Rimini Road. Firefighters used aircraft to spot hot spots and clear trees for safer operations as forest closures now affect a section of the Boulder Mountains about 17 miles southwest of Helena—officials urge residents to follow safety instructions.  KTVH

  • BLM approved NorthWestern Energy’s plan to build a 74-mile natural gas pipeline from Helena to Three Forks—following an accelerated 14-day environmental review process.  Independent Record
