CRIME NEWS

  • A Helena bookkeeper pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was sentenced to 1 year and 1 day in prison on July 14 — he must repay over $45,000 in restitution.  Independent Record

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Big Sky State Games opening ceremonies will include flags from all eight Montana tribal nations for the first time—this addition comes as a result of a new partnership with Western Native Voice.  Independent Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lewis and Clark County officials installed a rain gauge in the Horse Gulch burn scar to collect real-time rainfall data and better predict flood events. The device will help monitor weather conditions and warn communities if heavy rain leads to flooding—ensuring a quicker response to potential hazards.  Independent Record
  • Montana reported 61 grizzly bear conflicts so far in 2025, including 18 incidents with people and 12 causing property damage. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks released the new Bear Conflict Dashboard — an online tool that gives real time data on bear sightings and encounters — to help residents stay safe.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal district court judge in Missoula ruled Tuesday that his court did not have jurisdiction over the detention of Christopher Martinez Marvan after he was arrested in Helena on July 1 for an expired registration. Martinez is set to appear before an Immigration Judge in Tacoma on August 19 at 8:30 a.m.—his lawyers plan to appeal the ruling.  KTVH
  • After a swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, the Montana Department of Justice launched a chaplaincy program with about 10 chaplains to offer spiritual support to staff facing traumatic work conditions. The program will provide listening services — prayers, training, and resources — to help employees cope with stress.  KTVH
