Good morning, Helena. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 17th of July.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Helena Police Department clarified that body camera footage from the July 1 arrest of Christopher Martínez-Marvan raised questions about two officers’ actions and they confirmed a report stating an officer was on leave was incorrect because he was on pre-planned vacation — a Missoula judge ruled his case is outside the court’s jurisdiction and his immigration hearing will be held on August 19 in Tacoma. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Small Montana school districts have seen enrollment drop since a state law passed last year allowed students to switch schools easily—district leaders say this change has made it harder for rural communities to keep their schools open. Lawmakers also approved a new plan to reduce tuition payments when students change districts, which will take effect in the 2026-27 school year. KTVH
- ➤ Basin Elementary School has been placed in non-operational status after its only teacher resigned and enrollment dropped from 8 to zero for the 2025–2026 school year. A board meeting is scheduled for today at 5:30 p.m.—officials will decide on steps to reopen the 130-year-old school if they can secure two students and a qualified teacher. KTVH
- ➤ The Montana Office of Public Instruction said the recent Supreme Court decision allowing 1,400 federal education employee layoffs will not affect local schools today. Officials will continue to watch for federal guidance and support school districts as needed — a teacher apprenticeship program announced earlier remains unchanged. MontanaRightNow
