COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Last Chance Stampede & Fair drew big crowds last week, but drivers on Custer Avenue were stuck in heavy traffic that delayed many attendees en route to the carnival rides, rodeo, & Jeff Dunham show. Sheriff Dutton said he will meet with HPD & fair planners later this week to address the issues and consider adding measures at the Custer & Henderson intersection. KXLH
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Selena Janine Huth, a former teacher at Pete's Place in Helena, told police she had a sexual fantasy about child abuse materials and she and Brian Thomas Mangold from East Helena were charged with felony sexual abuse of children on July 25 with a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 8 & the daycare confirmed no children were harmed. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, the University of Montana’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research held its midyear update in Helena where director Jeff Michael explained that tariffs have created uncertainty and may hit Montana’s agriculture and construction sectors—sectors that are less resilient than manufacturing. He said rising steel prices and recent local tax changes add to the challenges while the report tour will continue in Great Falls, Kalispell, Billings, Bozeman, Butte and Missoula later this week. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Federal funds that were previously withheld are now being released to help Montana schools with programs like migrant student education and teacher training. Montana OPI expects to get the Grant Award Notifications next week — once received, the funds will be quickly allocated to districts while exact amounts remain unknown. MontanaRightNow
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The USS Helena submarine was decommissioned on July 25 at the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Washington after 38 years of service — the Navy will donate its propeller and sail to Helena. City officials said the relics will take about a year to dismantle before the city pays for transportation and plans a community display at Anchor Park. Independent Record
- ➤ Yes! for Helena Schools will hold a rally and press conference on August 4th to explain the importance of passing September 9th bonds for the school district. The local bond campaign seeks to inform voters and encourage support ahead of the community vote. Independent Record
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ About 160 kids took part in the S3DA Western Outdoor Target National Championship weekend at Siebel Soccer Complex from July 24 to July 27. Organizers said the event gave young archers a chance to earn college scholarships and try new shooting styles — with participants coming from Texas, Idaho, Oklahoma and Utah — and they hope to see more youth join next year. - ➤ The 64th annual Last Chance Stampede ended Saturday night at Cool Alley Arena with several champions crowned. Paige Camp (of Belgrade) won the breakaway event and her husband, Caden (winner of team roping and all-around in 2021), added a note of legacy to the competition. KXLH
