BUSINESS NEWS

  • NorthWestern Energy signed a letter of intent late Tuesday night to supply up to 1,000 MW by 2030 for a planned AI data center by Quantica Infrastructure — the project would be Montana’s largest if built. It has raised concerns about grid capacity given that current demand is around 750 MW.  Independent Record

CRIME NEWS

  • Richard Dean Karbo pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon after he shot his friend twelve to thirteen times at his Wolf Creek home during a drinking session and was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 15 years suspended—he must pay around $30,000 in restitution with about $15,000 still owed.  Independent Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents have received taxable value letters and tax rebate postcards after updated property assessments were sent, with some homeowners expressing concern over steep increases. The online portal to apply for a rebate of up to 400 dollars opens August 15 and closes October 1, and the property tax bills will be mailed in October (updated by the Montana Department of Revenue).  KTVH
  • Helena will begin an extensive two-month fuel reduction project on Mount Helena and Mount Ascension starting Monday — city officials say the project is set to lower wildfire risks in the South Hills.  Independent Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services confirmed West Nile virus in four mosquito pools (three in Lewis and Clark County) and urged Helena residents and livestock owners to protect themselves by wearing long clothing, draining standing water, using DEET, and avoiding outdoor time at dawn and dusk.  KTVH
