  • The Helena Farmers’ Market was named the best in Montana by Distinctly Montana Magazine for the third year in a row—an honor that highlights its strong reputation and local support.  Independent Record

CRIME NEWS

  • Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton said that after a seven-day manhunt, authorities arrested Michael Brown, a 45-year-old suspect, on Friday in Anaconda for the shooting at The Owl Bar that killed four people—updates are expected as investigators learn more.  KTVH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Blackfeet citizen Diana Burd launched the first Native-run equine search team to reduce wait times for missing person rescues on rural reservations. The team trained at Warfield Equestrian Park in Billings on August 4 and aims to honor local traditions while strengthening community response.  Independent Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Developers working on the former ASARCO smelter site in East Helena received the EPA’s nationwide Phoenix Award for their brownfield cleanup and reinvestment efforts. The project cleaned nearly 2,000 acres and involved partnerships with local groups—helping create safer, renewed community spaces.  KTVH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff led a training session on backcountry investigations following an eight-day manhunt that ended Friday for a shooting suspect in Anaconda. The exercise focused on handling vast, rugged terrain and harsh weather (38 agencies collaborated during the search).  KTVH
  • On August 7 at the Great Northern Hotel, Helena voters asked mayoral and City Commission candidates rapid questions on public transportation, homelessness, and city management ahead of the Sept. 9 primary. Candidates—ranging from current incumbents to new hopefuls—explained plans to improve downtown parking, transit services, and support for the unhoused.  Independent Record

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Golden Estates Trailer Court in Helena was sold in February to an out-of-state management company, and tenants saw rents rise from $400 to nearly $600 while facing water shutoffs in April and July. Residents said they could not reach management by phone and received a notice taped to their doors plus dealt with a messy mailroom and ongoing water issues.  Independent Record
