ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A large grass fire is burning near Reserve Street and I-90, causing several businesses to evacuate while fire trucks are stationed near Bretz RV & Marine. Emergency crews are working to contain the blaze and ensure public safety.  Independent Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Helena Public Schools officials and state legislator Rep. Luke Muszkiewicz answered questions at a League of Women Voters forum on August 21 as they discussed $283M bond proposals for facility upgrades. The proposals target improvements at Helena High, Capital High, and Kessler Elementary—ballots were mailed on August 22 and the vote is set for Sept. 9.  Independent Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emily Dean, 33, is running for Helena mayor and says her priorities are community vitality, modern infrastructure, and effective city services—goals she plans to achieve with stronger local leadership if elected.  Independent Record
  • In Helena, five candidates are running for mayor after incumbent Collins announced he will not seek a third term. Ballots were mailed by Lewis and Clark County election officials and residents must return them by 8 p.m. on Sept. 9 — marking the first municipal primary since 2001 — to choose the two who will advance to the general election.  KXLH
  • At Thursday's Fish & Wildlife Commission meeting, Montana Fish & Wildlife & Parks approved 22 conservation leases & 2 conservation easements to protect habitats & expand public access. The Stafford Ferry easement secures wild sheep habitat while the Great Outdoors Phase Two easement protects hunting near Libby, and the approvals will go to the land board meeting in October.  KTVH
  • Helena mayoral candidate Andy Shirtliff attended the Last Chance Stampede Parade in July and a meet-and-greet on August 12 to listen to residents and share his ideas on housing and public communication—he stressed the need for affordable housing, better infrastructure, and school support through a proposed $243 million bond. Shirtliff, who leads the state building industry group, believes change is coming and will work with the community to bring new opportunities to Helena.  KXLH
