ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighter Ruben Gonzalez Romero planned to retire after one more season but died on Aug. 24 while fighting the Bivens Creek fire in Montana when he suffered a cardiac emergency—his body will be returned to his native Mexico. Independent Record

- ➤ Bob's Valley Market, a staple in the Helena Valley for 50 years, will double in size by adding 15,000 square feet to expand its produce, deli, and bakery. The family-owned store expects to complete construction by summer — 2026 and will build a new parking lot shared with Ace Hardware. KTVH
- ➤ At a meeting on Aug. 28 at Helena College, John Hines from NorthWestern Energy said the planned merger with Black Hills Corp. will keep the Butte headquarters open with minimal layoffs, though regulatory approval is still needed and the process will take 12 to 15 months. Independent Record

- ➤ Two nonvoting student representatives — Brock Gardipee of Helena High and Delaney Lynch of Capital High — joined the Helena Public Schools board in June for the 2025-26 school year and said they are ready to speak up for students and help guide school decisions. They will offer their input on the upcoming bond election on Sept.9. Independent Record
- ➤ At Broadwater Elementary, students will receive eight new books each through the If You Give a Child a Book campaign as KTVH and the Scripps Howard Fund boost donations today—helping children living in poverty learn to read. Principal Kellie Boedecker said the drive improves literacy and strengthens home-to-school links. KTVH
- ➤ Last week, the Montana Historical Society led an evening class at Carroll College where students played traditional Indigenous games like guessing sticks from the Chippewa and Run and Scream from the Blackfeet. - ➤ On Aug. 26, Lewis and Clark County commissioners accepted a $10K grant from the Treacy Foundation to purchase and install a propane parlor stove in the historic Unionville School.
