EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Helena Public School Bonds passed with over $280 million, but Superintendent Rex Weltz said no work will start for a month—he noted the district pre-planned for all outcomes and will soon interview architects to guide a renovation process that may take over two years. The community can expect transparency and input as plans develop. KTVH
- ➤ East Helena High School now has over 2,000 students after an increase of about 50 to 60 from last year, and a floating teacher is helping during planning periods—district leaders are preparing to expand facilities if needed with new housing developments. KTVH
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Montana Department of Transportation invites local residents to submit comments on a plan to upgrade 11th Avenue and Prospect Avenue from Montana Avenue east to near Gibbon Street in front of Walmart. Construction is planned for 2027 or 2028 and will resurface the road, update markings and install flashing crosswalk signs — steps meant to extend the roadway’s life and improve accessibility. KTVH
- ➤ Primary results from Helena’s first municipal primary in 24 years show City Commissioners Andy Shirtliff and Emily Dean advancing to the Nov. 4 mayoral race with 48.33% and 36.53% of votes while counts remain preliminary until Sept. 19. Four City Commission candidates Melinda Reed, Ben Rigby, Haley McKnight and Shawn White Wolf also advanced as turnout reached nearly 60% and interest grew following Helena Public Schools’ $283 million bond request (bond). HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ St. Peter’s Health uses trained peer mentors to guide neighbors toward recovery during National Addiction Recovery Month here in Helena. The program is funded by Montana trusts and aids emergency patients and staff in their Recovery Friendly Workplace Initiative — a move to lessen stigma and reduce emergency visits. KXLH
