Good morning, Helena. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 13th of September.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A study found Montana taxpayers earn nearly $13 for every dollar invested in tribal colleges—showing strong returns—and this research may guide future education funding decisions.  Independent Record
  • ExplorationWorks is turning its old balcony into a new virtual classroom with a 360-degree Anywhere Room that uses ceiling and wall projectors for hands-on learning. Construction began in late spring/early summer and will finish by early 2026 — the $800,000 project is 5% away from its funding goal and is supported by community partnerships and donations.  KTVH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Forest Service will lead a tour on Sept. 18 from York Community Park—departing at 6 p.m.—to show recovery efforts from the Horse Gulch fire, and the tour will end around 7:30 p.m. at the south end of Jimtown Road.  Independent Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sept 12, several hundred people gathered in front of the Montana State Capitol to honor Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist assassinated earlier this week. Lawmakers including state Sen. Becky Beard and state Rep. Braxton Mitchell said his death marked a turning point—urging supporters to continue his advocacy as a highway patrol trooper monitored the event from the Capitol roof.  KXLH
  • The new Head Lane Bridge reopened to traffic today—county officials said work began June 25 to replace the weight-restricted timber bridge at Sevenmile Creek.  Independent Record
  • Hundreds of Montana supporters gathered on the steps of the State Capitol Friday to mourn conservative activist Charlie Kirk after he was shot at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, and authorities arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the incident. Young conservatives, who said Kirk inspired them to join politics, held vigils and prayer services at campus and in Bozeman — with a prayer service scheduled for Friday in Missoula.  Independent Record
  • The county has built two bridges over Flat Creek on Birdtail Road as a temporary solution (located nearly 3.8 miles north of U.S. Highway 287 and about 18 miles from Wolf Creek) to ease traffic until a permanent fix is planned.  Independent Record
  • Yesterday, nuclear expert Matt Korda met with local journalists in Helena to outline planned updates to Montana's nuclear defense network, which includes around 150 missile silos and the Sentinel missile system at Malmstrom Air Force Base—he warned that significant cost overruns and new land easements could lead to increased taxpayer expenses.  KTVH
