Good morning, Helena. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 18th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At the Helena Civic Center on Thursday, firefighter and paramedic Steven Reather was honored as firefighter of the year by the Helena Exchange Club. Friends, family, and Station One celebrated his service (six years on the job) and his work in fire safety education in the community.  KXLH
  • Engineers in Helena now use strong building methods to help structures stand up better in quakes — a shift from older times when unreinforced brick often broke — as new projects like Central School show updated designs that keep people safe.  KTVH
  • Central Elementary's 6th annual costume swap has ended—extra costumes remain available for students. The 8th annual ski swap at Play It Again Sports will run today and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. off Dredge Drive, offering winter gear for families.  KTVH

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Haunted Helena Trolley Tour returns to Helena to honor local historian Ellen Baumler, whose tours ended after her December 2023 passing. Owner Lani Schlater and program director Zachary Coe of the Foundation for Montana History now offer the tour with 50% of proceeds aiding preservation — tickets are selling fast — as spooky season nears.  KTVH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Helena Public Schools is seeking community feedback on proposed school boundary changes that would affect nine school groups and roughly 350 students—district officials want local input to guide their planning.  Independent Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Helena Valley sits on varied sediments and rocks that raise the risk of earthquake damage, as shown by the 6.2 quake in 1935. Experts note that vulnerable areas along Ten Mile Creek, Prickly Pear Creek, and Lake Helena could experience liquefaction if a future quake occurs (since the regional faults remain active).  KTVH
  • In autumn 1935, Helena experienced a series of earthquakes that many thought were caused by an explosion — violent tremors were felt in nearby Anaconda, Deer Lodge, Dillon, Bozeman, Missoula and Billings as reported by the Montana Standard.  Independent Record
