COMMUNITY NEWS

  • About 60 volunteers joined the fifth annual Warm Hearts, Warm Homes event to help neighbors stay warm as Mark’s Lumber donated 18 cords of wood—chopped, split, and stacked—to families in Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and Broadwater counties; those in need can call the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program for firewood pickup.  KTVH

  • Sculptor Jon Corson-Rikert revived his passion for art with his new kelp-themed work High Desert Kelp that brightens a Helena neighborhood — he said a long pause for family life led him back to sculpting.  Independent Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carroll College announced Dr. Michelle Heinan as the new Physician Assistant program director, effective November 1, when she will work remotely while traveling to Helena regularly. The college plans to submit its accreditation application in spring and begin the first cohort of 34 students in May 2028 — while it expands its team and builds local healthcare partnerships.  MontanaRightNow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Helena police urban wildlife officers have wrapped up their two-week deer count to manage the city's deer population (a program started in 2008). The data will go to Fish, Wildlife, and Parks to set a winter trapping quota and plan a program to move deer to areas where hunting is allowed (to reduce conflicts between wildlife, people, and pets).  KTVH

  • During National Teen Driver Safety Week—which runs from October 19 to October 25—the Montana Highway Patrol warned Helena teens and parents to drive safely after reports showed over 2,100 young drivers died in crashes in 2023; Trooper Nicholas Navarro offered advice to help reduce teen traffic fatalities.  KTVH
  • Montana farmers face economic difficulties from the ongoing 23-day government shutdown, which has limited their access to disaster payments and important USDA reports — local farm service agency offices will reopen Thursday to help ease the strain on rural communities.  KXLH
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana came under investigation after a data breach put the names, addresses and health details of up to 462,000 customers at risk between November 8 and March 5 — the firm offered free identity protection through Experian’s service. State auditor Commissioner Brown said new cybersecurity measures and a public awareness campaign will soon help stop fraud — and the probe is ongoing.  MontanaRightNow
